The Peak District is often celebrated for its walking routes and high-level hikes. From personal experience, though, we know that getting out on foot isn’t always easy – or even possible.
Alex has been waiting for a hip replacement for some time now, and long walks simply aren’t on the agenda. Like many people, we’ve had to rethink how we enjoy the countryside, particularly during the quieter winter months. What we’ve discovered is that some of the most restorative moments don’t involve walking far at all.
Scenic drives are a great way to experience the landscape.
Winding lanes, open views, dramatic edges and peaceful valleys can be enjoyed slowly, with the freedom to stop when you want and take things at your own pace. Sometimes it’s as simple as pulling over, opening the window, and breathing it all in.
There are also some wonderful resources that make this kind of exploring easier. We particularly like the scenic drive routes curated by Accessible Derbyshire, which highlight beautiful routes across the county and suggest accessible places to pause along the way.
At Darley House, we believe the countryside should be for everyone — whether that means hiking boots or just a warm coat, a flask of tea, and a comfortable car seat.
However you choose to explore, the Peak District has a way of meeting you where you are.
