Accessibility in the house

Darley House is a grand Georgian House on two levels set in approximately an acre of beautiful gardens landscaped by Sir Joseph Paxton in the 1840s.

The front drive is flat and it is possible to park quite close to the front door.  There are two shallow steps up to the front door (see below). Once inside there are no changes of level other than between floors.  All access to the garden from the house (other than the front door) is one step down.

All bedrooms are upstairs accessed by a stone staircase with a central carpeted runner. The steps are gentle with two returns and a strong mahogany handrail.

Three of the bedrooms have ensuite facilities: Tissington (walk in shower, standalone bath, bidet, double basins and toilet), Dovedale (walk in shower, stand alone bath, basin and toilet) and Darley (shower with one step up, basin and toilet). All showers have a non-slip bath mat.

There is a beautiful downstairs walk-in wet room with a fitted stone bench in Moroccan plaster (see Photo Gallery).  Access is through the downstairs toilet room.  There is another separate shower room upstairs but there is a change of level and a step into the shower.

The house is warm in winter due to our under floor heating.

We can provide a dining chair and bedroom chair with arms and are very happy to take delivery of any special assistance equipment in advance.

Accessibility in the gardens

The beautiful gardensare on two levels both of which are relatively flat and connected by a stone balustrade and staircase with 12 steps. The house sits on the lower garden level (and this part is quite extensive in itself) and includes the side entrance with beautiful planting, main lawns and herbaceous borders. See photo above.

To access the gardens its best to go out of the kitchen bay doors or games room doors.  Please note access via the utility area is less suitable for those with mobility issues as there are a set 6 steps (with rope hand rail) up to upper garden level.

You can get to the upper garden level, avoiding the stone steps, by walking around the copper beech mound.  All walk-ways are gravel.
